Don’t Miss Mass Bay RRE’s Rare Mileage
‘Day Cape Codder’
over the Cape Cod Central & Mass Coastal Railroads
Buzzards Bay - Middleboro - N. Falmouth - Hyannis & Return
Saturday, May 15, 2010 ONLY!!
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to ride - in one day - all of the Mass Coastal and Cape Cod Central lines over which a passenger train can operate. Mass Bay RRE’s ‘Day Cape Codder’ tour of the line special train continues our 75-year-old tradition of offering unique train excursions to the public.
Our trip “officially” starts from the preserved ex-New Haven station in Buzzards Bay at 8:30 AM, although passengers on the Cape may board the train earlier at West Barnstable. From Buzzards Bay we’ll travel north through Wareham and South Middleboro to the MBTA’s Middleboro/Lakeville commuter rail station, where passengers may connect from outbound MBTA train #1001. From Middleboro we will head back south through Buzzards Bay and across the historic 544’ long Cape Cod Canal lift bridge to Canal Junction. Here our special swings right to follow what
remains of the New Haven Railroad’s Woods Hole branch to North Falmouth – the route from 1884-1917 of the private, by-subscription-only Flying Dude. We’ll then return to Canal Junction before turning east for the journey along the Cape Cod Canal and then through Sagamore, Sandwich and West Barnstable to Hyannis. After a short stop for photos we’ll return to West Barnstable for a visit to the Cape Cod Chapter NRHS museum in the restored 1912 depot. Continuing westward, our special will cross the Canal bridge one more time before ending its day’s run back at Buzzards Bay.
Our train will consist of coaches from the Cape Cod Central Railroad. Motive power will be provided by one or more vintage diesels. A limited number of seats will be available in the lounge car “Cape Codder”, including complimentary snacks and beverages (extra fare - see below). Current Mass Bay RRE members are eligible for reduced fares.
Train capacity is limited! We will assign seats by car only and will reserve blocks of seats for groups of four or more. Passengers wishing to sit together must order tickets together at the same time. Box lunches are available for advance purchase, or you may bring your own food. Light snack and beverage service will be available on board the train.
This trip operates ONE DAY ONLY, rain or shine. All sales are final and tickets are not refundable. Alcoholic beverages and smoking will not be permitted aboard this train. Tickets will be mailed to you about 10 days prior to the trip. We will send driving directions to the departure points with your tickets. Please notify us if special accommodations (ie, handicap seating, etc.) are required.
THE COMMUTER RAIL CONNECTION
Make it an all-rail journey to the Cape by taking MBTA Train #1001 from Boston & points south to the Middleboro/Lakeville station and a convenient platform connection to our special train (Train #1001 departs South Station 8:15 AM, Braintree 8:35 AM). Charter buses will return you to Middleboro from Buzzards Bay for a connection with inbound train #1014 at 7:05 PM.
