‘Railroads along the Connecticut River’

Presented by Guest Speaker Philip Johnson

Mt. Holyoke Elevating Rwy base station

Phil Johnson’s in-person presentation will describe some railroads in Western Massachusetts that ran among the Connecticut River's most populated areas. All of the usual railroads are represented: B&A, B&M, NH, CV, plus eleven branch lines and several short lines, along with a few surprises. Also included will be the Mt. Holyoke Elevating Railway (below) , a funicular that ran up the slope of Mount Holyoke to the mountaintop hotel.

Philip Johnson is a lifelong railfan who has lived in the Connecticut River valley his whole life. His first train ride was Edaville in 1954 with family and friends. Phil has written two books about the almost-forgotten Hampden Railroad and is completing a book on the Ware River Railroad. He has been a long-time member of Mass Bay RRE, the Amherst Railway Society and other railroad history organizations for many years.
