THE 2010 H. ALBERT WEBB MEMORIAL
RAILROAD PRESERVATION AWARD
Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts, Inc. (Mass Bay RRE) is now accepting applications for the 2010 H. Albert Webb Memorial Railroad Preservation Award. Nonprofit, tax-exempt [Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3)] organizations that preserve historically significant railroad equipment, structures or information from New England railroads are eligible to apply. The successful applicant will receive a single $10,000 grant.
Mass Bay RRE member Leigh Webb created the H. Albert Webb Memorial Award in 2000 to recognize his father's love for New England railroading. Mass Bay RRE acts as Mr. Webb's agent in soliciting applications for the award, reviewing the complete applications, and administering the grants as they are used.
The 2009 H. Albert Webb Memorial Railroad Preservation Award went to the Boston Street Railway Association to fund portions of the restoration of Boston Elevated Railway #5706, a Type 5 streetcar. In 2008, the H. Albert Webb Award went to the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum to construct an addition to their car shop at Alna, Maine. The Beverly Historical Society & Museum won the 2007 Award to scan and catalog approximately 5,000 railroad images from the Walker Transportation Collection at the Museum. The 2006 Award was presented to the New England Railway Historical Society (Seashore Trolley Museum) to help fund restoration to operating condition of Atlantic Shore Line electric locomotive #100. The 2005 Award was presented to the Railroad Museum of New England to help restore Boston & Maine #1732 diesel locomotive to operation. The 2004 Award went to restore the interior of the six double bedroom/lounge Pullman "Pine Tree State," the last sleeping car built for the New Haven Railroad. The 2003 Award to the Friends of Bedford (MA) Depot Park paid for rebuilding a quarter-mile of two-foot-gauge track on the original Billerica & Bedford Railroad right-of-way. Mr. Webb gave the 2001 Award to assist in restoring B&M 4-6-2 steam locomotive #3713. Qualified tax-exempt organizations from outside New England that hold equipment, structures or information about New England railroads are welcome to apply.
The application period for the 2010 H. Albert Webb Memorial Award closes at 5 PM on Monday, September 28, 2009. However, Mr. Webb and Mass Bay RRE encourage qualified organizations to apply as early as possible, preferably well before the September deadline. The Mass Bay RRE Award Committee will carefully evaluate all timely and complete applications and make its recommendation to Mr. Webb, who chooses the successful recipient. Mr. Webb expects to announce the 2010 H. Albert Webb Memorial Award recipient in the Spring of 2010.
