REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS
FOR THE 2009 H. ALBERT WEBB MEMORIAL
RAILROAD PRESERVATION AWARD

Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts, Inc. (Mass Bay RRE) is now accepting applications for the 2009 H. Albert Webb Memorial Railroad Preservation Award. Nonprofit, tax-exempt [Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3)] organizations that preserve historically significant railroad equipment, structures or information from New England railroads are eligible to apply. The successful applicant will receive a single $10,000 grant.

Mass Bay RRE member Leigh Webb created the H. Albert Webb Memorial Award in 2000 to recognize his father's love for New England railroading. Mass Bay RRE acts as Mr. Webb's agent in soliciting applications for the award, reviewing the complete applications, and administering the grants as they are used.

Grants from the H. Albert Webb Memorial Award contributed to the restoration of a Boston & Maine Railroad steam locomotive in Pennsylvania (2001), a New Haven Railroad sleeping car in North Carolina (2004), a Boston & Maine dieset locomotive in Connecticut (2005), and an Atlantic Shore Line Railway electric locomotive in Maine (2006). Other grants assisted in rebuilding a historic section of two-foot-gauge track in Bedford, Mass. (2003), and preserving historic railroad photographs by digital scanning in Beveriy, Mass. (2007). Qualified tax-exempt organizations from outside New England that hold equipment, structures or information about New England railroads are welcome to apply.

The application period for the 2009 H. Albert Webb Memorial Award closes at 5 PM on Monday, September 29, 2008. However, Mr. Webb and Mass Bay RRE encourage qualified organizations to apply as early as possible, preferably well before the September deadline. The Mass Bay RRE Award Committee will carefully evaluate all timely and complete applications and make its recommendation to Mr. Webb, who chooses the successful recipient. Mr. Webb expects to announce the 2009 H. Albert Webb Memorial Award recipient in January 2009.

Application forms for the 2009 H. Albert Webb Memorial Railroad Preservation Award are now available here.
