Mass Bay RRE Providence & Worcester Tripod Tour October 1, 2005

 

A stated in its annual report, "The Providence and Worcester Railroad Company is a regional freight railroad operating in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York. The Company interchanges freight traffic with CSX at Worcester, MA and at New Haven, CT; with the Springfield Terminal Railway Company (formerly Boston and Maine Railroad) at Gardner, MA; with the New England Central Railroad (formerly Central Vermont Railway), Canadian Pacific Railway and Canadian National at New London, CT; with the New York and Atlantic Railroad (formerly Long Island Railroad) at Fresh Pond Junction (Queens), NY; and with the Connecticut Southern Railroad at Hartford, CT. It operates four classification yards in Worcester, MA, Cumberland, RI, Plainfield and New Haven, CT. The Worcester, MA and Plainfield, CT locations also house equipment maintenance facilities.

"The Company transports a wide variety of commodities for its approximately 165 customers, including construction aggregate, iron and steel products, chemicals, lumber, scrap metals, plastic resins, cement, coal, construction and demolition debris, processed foods and edible food stuffs, such as frozen foods, corn syrup and animal and vegetable oils. In 2004, the company transported approximately 33,000 carloads of freight."
