Trip Chairman Bill Crawford set up our June 19 VRR special for the end of the railroad's regular tourist operating day. About 125 members were aboard, many of whom gathered early at Essex for a walking tour of VRR's steam shop, where 2-8-2 40 (Alco, 1920; ex- Aberdeen & Rockfish) was under repair. Master mechanic J. David Conrad told us of the challenges of maintaining steam power in 2004.
