Our final stop is a return visit to Clark's Trading Post on its last open day. By good luck, we pull in minutes before woodburning Climax 6 (ex-Beebe River 6, 1921) leaves with a train. After 6 departs with an impressive show of thrashing rods, our cameras get a clear view of East Branch & Lincoln 24-2T 5 (Baldwin, 1906), displayed with a freight consist. For years 5, last of seven Baldwin 2-4-2Ts on J. E. Henry's Zealand Valley and EB&L, was "stuffed and mounted" at the entrance to Loon Mountain Ski Area, off the Kancamagus Highway east of Lincoln. But recently Clark's and Loon swapped; ex-U.S. Army Watertown (NY) Arsenal 0-4-0T 3 (Porter, 1917); another EB&L veteran, went to Loon, and EB&L 5 joined Clark's stable of logging stearn power. Despite threading heavy southbound highway traffic on I-93 as the "leafpeepers" all run for home, we reach Manchester on time and tie up at South Station 40 minutes off the predicted schedule. |
