Weekend on the Quebec Central - October 9-13, 2003

St. Johnsbury station

The immigration officer at the u.s. border is a railfan who spends more time asking what we did than checking our papers. We roll through peak fall foliage to St. Johnsbury for lunch at the Black Bear Tavern, where Dr. Marvin Kendall, owner of a small railroad museum in nearby Barnet, stops by. Unfortunately, we must make Manchester Airport, so some riders may catch late-afternoon flights, and we cannot detour to see his collection.

We do make a short inspection of the downtown CPR depot that also served Maine Central and St. Johnsbury & Lake Champlain. The town owns the building; a visitors' information center fills the main waiting room. After photographing the station and its weed-grown yard, we reboard and continue south.
