At Clark's Trading Post, North Woodstock, we charter White Mountain Central's ex-Maine Central railbus (left). MEC bought an off-the-shelf REO highway bus in 1929; the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes shop office, under master mechanic Lee Stinchfield, converted it for railroad use. MEC used the fume-belching hybrid between Oquossoc and Kennebago on the Rangeley Lakes & Megantic, the northern extension of its Rumford Falls & Rangeley Lakes subsidiary. After MEC ended service in 1933, Kennebago Bus Company bought the bus to reach roadless logging and hunting camps. In 1936 Kennebago Bus also quit, and the bus languished in Strong, ME, until Clark's bought it in the 1970's. The elegantly restored bus has its original gasoline engine. Since it only holds 20 passengers, our group must split in two; the friendly Clark's staff opens several museum buildings for those who aren't riding. |
