Downeaster to Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad - August 2003

Thirteen "Portland Explorer" passengers, guidebooks in hand, satisfied their own curiosity, interest and tastes at downtown museums, an Italian street festival, shops, galleries and restaurants.

The charter shuttle and METRO buses brought everyone back to Amtrak in time for the 6:30 PM departure of #688 for Boston. Its consist had one less 60-seat coach than northbound #681, so "elbow room" aboard was nil. Some of us had to take seats Mass Bay RRE would not normally use, but there was no alternative. The amiable Amtrak crew, especially assistant conductor Shelly O'Connell, did its best to fit us in. Hungry and thirsty adventurers quickly boosted the Amcafe's business, buying up chowder, sandwiches, desserts and "celebratory libations." Arrival in Boston was a few minutes late at 9:20 PM, but all agreed we had a good day in Portland.
